Days With Danah
We have collected some snapshots and a few observations from Danahs extended “maternity leave”-visit at our home. These are everyday-snapshots and not at all show pictures.
We are very excited to hear about her succesful move to Calgary and we’re sure that she will get a wonderful life in Canada! We do feel a little sad about never seeing (realistically) her again, though. Danah is such a lovely, happy dog.
First day: "Hey, there’s a garden – let’s explore". We’re lucky to
live right next to the countryside.
"Sniff, sniff…". Cairns and meticulously groomed gardens are not
a great match.
The first thing that struck us, was that Danah is a very attention-seeking dog
compared to Ronia. She is always listening and always ready to receive a pat on
her head or a treat (that is, unless she’s hunting pheasants or hares).
"Sofa-cosiness": Danah loves to be close to people. There’s a
famous danish word for that: "Hygge".
Two sisters relaxes in the sofa. While living with us, she has learned that
dogs come in many sizes and colors, and learned a bit about city life.
Cold afternoon on the beach at Moesgaard. Henning has his hands full handling
both dogs.
In the forrest at Moesgaard. Danah enjoys outdoor life, and she doesn’t mind
getting her feet wet, Ronia is a lot more careful around puddles of water or a
muddy track.
Danah really likes to play with the "ball on a rope"-toy. It is
beeing used for tugs of war with Ronia and off course she loves to get us to
throw it and race towards it with Ronia hot on her heels. Danah usually wins –
she is quick and very eager to get to the ball.
This is the corner in our garden where digging is allowed. Lets not mention the holes in the
lawn.
Favorite chair with just enough space for two Cairns.
Catching a ray of late morning-sun in the early spring. On days where we’ve
both been working, they’ve been alone during the day. Some days, that means 5-7
hours. That hasn’t caused many problems.
Soap bubbles… Danah is a curious dog.
Hunting soap bubbles isn’t as much fun as hunting blackbirds, flies or
pheasants. Danah scared up a pheasant once – it flew over the fields and Danah
went right after it – out of sight. She was gone for a few minutes while Henning
yelled her name and gradually went from laughing to being worried. Danah
returned by herself after a few minutes – without the pheasant. If Danah had a
Christmas wish, we’re sure that it would be "a set of wings!".
Bettina wrote a polite letter to a dogfood company to tell them that their
cardboard boxes needed a stronger glue. The company replied by sending a package
with a new box of food and several treat-samples. Both dogs really liked the
smell of that package.
Two very well-behaved and top-motivated Cairns. It’s very easy to motivate
Danah with treats and she loves to work with people.
"So this is supposed to be the big pillow?" While staying at us,
Danah has been sleeping in her crate at night. One late evening Henning found Danah
asleep on her back in our bed – with all four legs sticking right up in the air.
She had a good excuse, though: The door to her crate had slammed shut, so she
couldn’t get to her usual "bed". Unfortunately, there is no picture of
that incident.
The windowsill is usually "off limits" but we just had to have this
one picture. We’re in no doubt that Danah really likes the vantage point and the
view over the fields.
Not sure if it was Danah or Ronia that caused the plant to drop from the
windowsill – but we would say that Danah is the prime suspect. No dogs were
harmed by the accident. This- and the next few are taken with Hennings mobile
phone (hence the lower quality).
Forrest Fun at Vilhelmsborg.
More forrest fun at Vilhelmsborg.
Danah found a hole next to the track and promptly started to dig for the
mouse. She defended the hole even when a larger dog passed on the track. Later
we met a Grand Danois. A good day were had by all.
Remember the windowsill-picture? Only one thing is better than watching the
fields from the window and that thing is: patrolling in the fields.
Danah has found the one place in the garden where she can jump over the fence
to get out and into the fields. We’re sure that she thinks that
it’s a great way to get a treat. We’ll call out for her, she’ll promptly come
running to collect her treat (she comes when called for – with or without a
treat) and we’ll lift her back into the fenced area where she’ll join Ronia and
get a few more treats. We humans are SO easy.
On Easter-Sunday we went to the Queens residence (Marselisborg) in Århus
with about 12.000 other people. Queen Margrethe II and her family arrived at the
balcony and we all yelled the obligatory Hurraz’es and sang Happy Birthday (it
was her 66th birthday). Unfortunately, Danah walked out of the picture (see the
red leash?). Danah handles crowds as well as she handles everything else that
she has been presented to.
Danah and Ronia fights over a chewing bone. Needless to say: Danah won! We hope that it goes without saying that she has won our hearts as well.
